Private Prescriptions – Marylebone
PRIVATE PRESCRIPTIONS – Conversion to NHS Prescriptions Policy –According to the British Medical Association guidelines general practitioners have no obligation to covert private prescriptions from private consultants to NHS prescriptions.
Private prescriptions are written medications that your private doctor has recommended for you. A private prescription is not an NHS prescription, so it is not paid for by the NHS. Some items cannot be prescribed in primary care.
At Marylebone we do like to assist patients who see consultants privately by converting prescriptions where we can, in particular, medications where you need to continue taking them and we can safely take over the monitoring. However, there are some considerations for our prescribers, when we receive your request to convert a private medication to an NHS medication we need to consider:
- The items requested, reason for medication and how long the medication will be continued for. Please ask your consultant to email a letter to us
- Converting private medications to NHS prescriptions take longer than the 48 hour turn around timeframe for routine repeat NHS items
- We cannot consider your request if this is a prescription that is currently not prescribed under the NHS guidelines
- We support and adhere to sustainable and cost-effective medications guidance. We prescribe using NHS script switch systems.
- You may need to provide a shared care agreement policy with your request.
You still have the option of taking your private prescription to the chemist in the meantime.
