Dear Colleague,
As you may be aware, the local NHS 111 service has been in the news recently. This follows an undercover investigation by the Sun newspaper.
As soon as we heard about these allegations, commissioners in North West and North Central London immediately announced that we would investigate these allegations, which were revealed while the Sun’s reporter took part in training to be an NHS 111 call handler.
We are working with NHS England and the NHS 111 provider London Central and West Unscheduled Care Collaborative (LCW) to understand what has happened. The review will be led by an independent third party and will report back to commissioners.
We know many practices use NHS 111 in answerphone messages or as an initial triage option for patients.
While we undertake this investigation, the service is safe to continue and be used as normal.
It is worth reminding patients that NHS 111 is open 24 hours a day, 7 days and week and they should continue to call 111 if:
They need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency.
They think they might need to go to A&Eor need another NHS urgent care service.
They don't know who to call or don't have a GP to call.
Thank you in advance for your ongoing support on this matter.
